The incredible story of the famous 2016 Bitfinex hack and resolution will go down in the annuls of crypto history as one of the most bizarre and compelling tales of all time.A husband and wife duo were allegedly attempting to launder almost 5 Billion dollars worth of Bitcoin, which was worth roughly $72M when it was stolen from popular crypto exchange Bitfinex in 2016. Yesterday’s arrest marks the largest financial seizure ever by the Department Of Justice. There are endless questions that still remain. Were the launderers the actual hackers? Have the coins been in their wallets since the hack, or did someone else transfer them? How were they laundering the funds, which were largely still intact 5 years later? Is this a setup?Aside from the facts above, the story of the two hackers is incredibly bizarre. The wife has a verified Twitter account and used to write for Forbes. One of her articles was titled, “Tips To Protect Your Business From Cybercriminals.” She also gave a talk on how to social engineer anything.Seriously.She also has a YouTube channel and music videos, proclaiming that she is a surrealist artist and rapper under the pseudonym "RAZZLEKHAN." It is arguably the worst music video of all time, and has spurred endless hilarious takes on the internet. The video was made private over night, but you can see it here on twitter. The deeper you dig, the more certain you are that we are living in a simulation and our AI overlords are playing a practical joke on us for their own entertainment. The story of her strange music career even made it to Rolling Stone. Here is a great twitter thread that summarizes the entire, which includes the full tale of how the government tracked the stolen Bitcoin, which had laid dormant for over 3 years before moving last month. You can read that here. The gist is that the husband was holding the private keys in CLOUD STORAGE. Everyone knows that you don't keep your private keys online - especially for 4 Billion dollars worth of Bitcoin!Perhaps the real story here is that it is once again crystal clear that Bitcoin is terrible for criminals. The public ledger makes laundering and cashing out the funds almost impossible. Law enforcement knew exactly where the coins were, they just needed to wait patiently for them to move. This should once again but a nail in the coffin of the "Bitcoin is only for criminals" argument, espoused by so many uninformed politicians. And what will happen to the coins next? Who owns them? DOJ says there will be a court process to claim and request return of bitcoins, and Bitfinex will surely be reimbursed. Will this have an effect on the market? Also, as Michael Saylor pointed out, the US now has Bitcoin on it's balance sheet, and is one of the largest holders in the world.I suggest you go on a deep dive on this story, you will not be disappointed!Chart Request Live Stream at 1:30 PM EST.
