I often stress the idea that most of your portfolio should be in quality projects like Bitcoin, Ethereum and other top 10 coins by market cap. This rule of thumb has turned increasingly less compelling and harder to follow, as coins such as Doge, Shiba, and ICP (not necessarily a meme) have gained overnight popularity, only to lose over 70%, 78%, and 94% of their value respectively from their recent highs. Even as the market matures, increased retail interest opens the door for low-quality coins to make headlines and rise quickly through the ranks. Don’t be tempted to FOMO in just because a coin has gained quick popularity – this is an easy way to lose money.Meme coins are good for traders who practice quality risk management and understand that they are gambling on hot potatoes that will eventually drop massively in value. They are not good investments. In fact, they are not investments at all, because there is little reason to believe that they will have long term value. A wise investor has a decade or more time horizon. In some ways, it has become even more necessary to DYOR (do your own research) before investing in these projects, because “quality” is still subjective and the industry is nascent. At some point we can expect to see coins solidify their spot at the top of the market cap list, but can still expect quick changes in and out based on popularity. Legacy markets rarely have dramatic shifts in market cap overnight - eventually crypto will likely be the same.Choose your investments wisely. If you are going to trade meme coins, understand that you are gambling and only use a small piece of your portfolio to roll the dice.Chart Request Live Stream at 2 PM EST. Please follow the rules.
